We know too well that the paddy and rice industry’s transformation is inevitable and vital for progress. With this in mind, we are making a determined effort to reshape and rejuvenate our paddy farming sector and contribute to a sustainable agro-food industry.

The primary goal of National Agrofood Policy 2.0 (NAP 2.0) is to increase the self-sufficiency level (SSL) of rice to 80 per cent from 2021 to 2030 and ultimately ensure the sustainability of the country's paddy and rice supply.

Realising the need for change and upholding the government’s aspiration, BERNAS stand together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI) and other key industry players to implement the Large Scale Smart Field Project (Smart SBB).

Adopting the concept of sustainable modern farming, SMART SBB aims to future-proof our paddy farming sector. We aspire to build an agile and resilient rice supply chain, hence, along the way, we have developed an inclusive farming model that connects the value chain and the respective stakeholders to work together in a climate of trust and collaboration.

Developing the right mindset, cultivating mutual respect, honesty and open communication between the key players is a fundamental aspect of any sustainable agriculture agenda.

We want our paddy farming sector to thrive and not just survive. With this initiative, we know that the potential is limitless. It will result in a renewed impetus in Malaysia’s paddy farming sector, to inspire and deliver a new generation of innovative large-scale farmers who take pride in contributing to feeding the nation.

The technology is enabling a constant change in the culture and potential of our paddy farming sector. We realise that achieving national food security in an environmentally sustainable way simply means that we are required to develop the industry by working with nature and not against it.
Our aim is to increase rice production through resource-friendly methods, thus we focus on adopting mechanised and automated farming practices, in line with the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0).

We acknowledge that the availability of appropriate and compatible mechanization fleet and technologies within our agricultural system is vital in feeding a growing population, protecting the environment and achieving sustainable food security.

Therefore, we render the necessary support to our farmers in the form of various farm tools, technology and machinery, which can effectively improve the utilization rate of their agricultural resources, enhance land quality and promote better control in pest management, improve production capacity and land output rates.

Our farm academy adopts an integrated co-learning approach. Learning to learn from our farmers, we then optimise their knowledge and drive it in the right direction. This is what we do.
Agricultural sustainability relies heavily on the integration of knowledge, skill, experience and the willingness to embrace change and make changes.

The above motivated us to establish our very own farm academy that adopts both experiential and conceptual learning. Seminars, workshops and trainings on Good Agriculture Practices, precision farming and integrated pest management are provided on regular basis by our qualified and experienced officers to help enhance farmers’ knowledge, skills and ability as well as to identify their level of readiness to switch to new technology.

These short courses allowed for a great degree of interaction and understanding between us and the farmers, especially in the smaller group sessions which addressed various farm and yield-related issues.

Our aspiration is also aimed at defining research priorities and the best technology to address the current challenges and future goals of our farming industry. Those priorities include biological pest control, biotechnology, information technology, and agroecology farming system.
